Definition Roots are the primary underground organs of vascular plants that anchor the plant in soil, absorb water and minerals, and often store nutrients. In traditional medicine, roots are valued for their concentrated bioactive compounds used in treatments for various ailments across cultures. They develop from the radicle of the embryo and exhibit geotropism, growing downward.
